Sara Post: Abstract Experiments
Join Sara Post this fall in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico for a 4-day workshop. Abstract Experiments is an explorative abstract painting workshop using a variety of media intuitively.
Dates: October 15-18, 10:00-5:00 each day with one-hour lunch break
Where: Jen Tough Gallery, 806 Old Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe, NM 87505
About this workshop:
Light, line, contour and color form the basis for experiments with abstraction. We’ll use thematic ideas from both nature and culture while exploring a variety of materials and techniques. Consideration of base layers, impacts of drawing and marks, optional additions of thin papers, additives such as sand and powdered pigments and layers of paint mixed with mediums are added and subtracted as we construct paintings. Working with layers helps students gain a better awareness of material interactions and their ability to create powerful surface dynamics. Additional inspiration will come from both personal observations and images of works by contemporary abstract artists.
This workshop is open to oil and acrylic painters. Layering ideas and practice are valuable for all paint media. We’ll experiment with mediums including cold wax and alkyds for oil painters and a range of acrylic mediums for acrylic painters We’ll also add raw pigments, sand and marble dust to vary surface texture. Bring the paints and other materials you like to use. The materials list offers suggestions for additions to your materials base as well as materials specific to this workshop.
About the instructor:
Abstraction is, for me, a natural language. It’s concentrated and challenging, mysterious and opaque. I love its ambiguities, that it often creates more questions than answers. —Sara Post
Sara Post, is an American abstract artist, A native of Texas, she has spent her adult life in northern California. Post studied painting at Southern Methodist University and has a Master’s degree in ceramics and art education from Northern Arizona University. She has been a practicing artist since 1981, winning national acclaim for her glaze painted ceramic sculpture, tableware and wall works starting with inclusion in Neiman-Marcus’s ground breaking American Art Forms.
A printmaking residency in Italy in 2008 changed her perspective on art making and initiated a shift. Branching out, she designed a twenty five piece textile collection for P-B Fabrics in 2012. Experiments with encaustic led to another change: mixing oil paint with cold wax medium. Her award-winning mixed media abstract painting has been exhibited in galleries and museums on both coasts.
Post uses paint or collaged paper layered with wax, to record and communicate experience. “Wax is a transitory medium, light conducting, suggestive of change. I’m intrigued by edges and boundaries—walls, fences, tree lines, shore lines, fault lines—shifting places where change is visibly taking place. Abstraction communicates by suggestion, by feel, allowing a communication that gives preference to emotional response."
