Sara Post: Groundwork, Alternative Painting Methods (Video Workshop)

$95

In this workshop we’ll use a variety of materials as ground layers for painting and drawing with pigment sticks, and oil paint mixed with cold wax, alkyd mediums, solvent and other materials. Working abstractly, we’ll examine how the qualities and textures of ground materials influence the painted surface. This is a unique opportunity to work with materials in a new way and will send your painting practice in exciting directions, increasing your knowledge of what is possible. — Sara Post

Sara Post is one of our most popular instructors, known for her quiet demeanor and intuitive style of working with oil, cold wax, solvents, graphite and paint sticks. Her works are ethereal yet hold form and structure, and frequently reference the natural world.

This workshop is a three lesson video workshop, just shy of 1.5 hours of content (86 minutes in total). There are plenty of clear explanations and process shots from overhead and observational views. Sara narrates this video, and it was filmed in Post's studio in Davis, California. This video is based on her popular (and frequently sold out) in-person workshops held around the country.

___________

About the instructor: Abstraction is, for me, a natural language. It’s concentrated and challenging, mysterious and opaque. I love its ambiguities, that it often creates more questions than answers.

Sara Post’s paintings explore complex, sometimes contradictory worlds. Personal experiences of nature and culture are represented in color drenched layers of loose geometry and freely drawn lines. Her materials range from oil paint and pigment sticks mixed with wax and solvents to more unorthodox combinations of charcoal, sand and cement, describing the ethereal in concrete terms.

A lifelong artist, her work transitioned from ceramics to painting after a printmaking residency with Linda Goodman in Italy in 2007. She began working with oil and cold wax mixed media in 2010, studying with Rebecca Crowell and Lisa Pressman.

Sara is represented by Jen Tough Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.
