When: Monday, November 30 - Friday, December 4, 2020 (5 days of instruction)
Where the live workshop is taking place: Santa Fe, NM (See our live workshop listing here)
Instructor: Michael Shemchuk ("Shem")
Instructor website: https://www.mshem.com/
About this workshop: In this 5 day workshop with artist Michael Shemchuk ("Shem"), attendees will work on 9 separate 16" x 16" cradled panels with the goal of creating a large multi-panel installation. Eight of the nine panels will have a neutral color focus, while one panel will be a contrasting panel that also visually collaborates with the other eight (8 + 1).
The focus will be on creating a cohesive, large scale installation using Shem's signature process of layering paint and paper, while adding and subtracting layers, to build a harmonious composition across all nine panels. He calls this process "Abstraction by Design" and it yields eye-catching multi-layered works.
Artists will leave with a solid understanding of Shem's working process and working large scale through multiple panels, as well as having a completed large scale, multi-panel piece to bring home. The gallery will be offering shipping for an additional fee for artist's convenience.
For artists who have taken Shem's workshops before, this workshop will offer further insight into working with larger scale installations by utilizing more panels, as well as exploring color theory as it applies to large scale composition.
Experience Level: Some experience in fine art is suggested, but not required as Shem is known for the ability to teach to all levels.
About the instructor: Michael Shemchuk ("Shem") is an abstract artist living and working in Northern California.
Known for selling out workshops internationally, Shem is one of the most sought after instructors teaching today. His workshops are fun, inspiring and totally not intimidating. Shem approaches teaching casually with a warm and charming demeanor that students love.
Born in the blue-collar mill town of Lowell Massachusetts in 1954, Shemchuk realized at an early age that his keen eye for color and form, burning curiosity, and love of adventure would necessitate a departure from the culturally spare town of Lowell. Largely self-taught, Shem did not emerge on the art scene in a conventional fashion. Following his native skills and sensitivities as an artist, his career has criss-crossed the world of applied arts and visual expression. Influenced by studies at the Academy of Art College and California State University, SF, Shem combined his love for photography, color, and abstraction. The result was an unusual amalgamation of interest and influences.
Shem’s work has evolved over the last two decades, shaped directly by a close engagement with material and process. In 2017, Shem was inspired to further his pursuit of abstraction and design by streamlining his materials and employing process as integral to his work. The result is his Surface Tension series, which is based on an organic process involving water, paper, pressure, friction, and time.
